Wurstfest has been held in New Braunfels since 1961. I haven’t been going that whole time, of course – but I can report unequivocally that this year’s was the best one yet.
In 2007, I headed off to Munich for the Oktoberfest – I had only been to Germany once before when I was 2 so I can almost safely say that this was my first experience with German culture. After visiting England, France, Spain and Italy, I wasn’t really expecting too much from Germany. What, after all, could I possibly be impressed with after seeing Rome and Paris?
Germany turned out to be one of my favorite places I had ever visited. There was something about the place that evoked all kinds of memories of fairy-tales and legends I had been told as a child. The people were as friendly and welcoming as the Texans I love to call my family. The beer was some of the best I had ever tasted. The beds were large and comfortable. The women were unbelievable.
All in all – I love Germany.
And Wurstfest – our little festival in New Braunfels – is probably the closest thing you’ll ever experience to Oktoberfest here in Texas. If you missed last weekend, you can always hit it up this weekend. And if don’t visit this year, the only thing I can promise you is that you’ll be one year older when you do.
